James Cameron to Co-Write Dark Fantasy Epic The Devils with Joe Abercrombie

James Cameron is set to venture into dark fantasy with his next project, co-writing a film adaptation of Joe Abercrombie’s latest novel, The Devils. This marks a departure from Cameron’s sci-fi legacy as he collaborates directly with Abercrombie to bring this gritty, medieval-inspired world to the big screen.

About The Devils

Published on May 6, 2025, The Devils is a dark fantasy novel that follows a condemned man—a disgraced former general—who is plucked from death row to lead a desperate mission. He commands a misfit band of criminals, heretics, and outcasts, known as “the Devils,” on a near-suicidal quest to turn the tide of a war humanity is losing against monstrous foes. The novel has been described as a “twisted, stylish, alt-universe middle-ages romp,” blending horror, adventure, and political intrigue.

Cameron’s Vision

Cameron expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating:

“How do I describe The Devils? A sharply witty horror adventure? An epic battle between good and evil, except most of the time you can’t tell which is which? This is Joe Abercrombie in absolute peak form, opening up a whole new world and an ensemble of delicious new characters.”

While it’s not yet confirmed if Cameron will direct the film, his involvement in co-writing the script alongside Abercrombie suggests a deep commitment to faithfully adapting the novel’s complex narrative and rich world-building.

What’s Next?

Cameron plans to begin work on The Devils after completing Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment in the Avatar franchise, slated for release on December 19, 2025.
